Does he at least put them on for you or do you just get a kit and have to do it yourself?

    DIY.

Instructions (fixits) are linked on his site.

I think Windows 7 is pretty damn good, both from a user standpoint and a developer standpoint. As an end user OS, it's pretty nice - TONS of media options besides the Apple Ecosystem (TM), and Aero is quite nice.

As a developer OS, Visual Studio has one of the strongest debugging tools around - provided you learn how to effectively use them.

As an enterprise OS, there are immense amounts of control and management - albeit very, very expensive ones xD

I wouldn't trade some aspects of OS X, like the Unix-ish core - but if Windows took up a Unix-ish backend I'd probably dump OS X in a heartbeat and probably never look back.

Don't get me wrong, OS X is a fantastic OS and I've enjoyed using it for the past 10 years, and I'll probably continue to buy many more Macs. Sometimes, I get tired of Steve Jobs' pigheaded nature and the last 2 releases of OS X haven't really had any new uniquely Apple things. Lion doesn't exactly look promising on that front. :\

It's still really good though, but it hurts to see the amount of crap I see on this board as far as childish behavior regarding what OS someone decides to use. I've carried around my Vaio before and had some Mac friends trash talk my Vaio, and carried my PowerBook around and had my PC friends trash talk my Mac lol :D

Anyone else think this is a little too public? And it's not a very comfortable place to sit having coffeeno matter how good the food is. I imagine a couple of billionaires could have found a more comfortable and more private place for coffee and a chat, unless they're being deliberately "public".

Is this how they squash a rumour in sily-con valley? Media says these two hate each other's guts. Be seen being nice to each other in public.

There was a study a bit ago that showed that complexity drastically reduced participation in altruistic activities, while simplicity -- especially exact instructions on how to participate -- drastically increased participation.

I think that's applies here. Using a Mac is so simple, generally speaking, that the folding@home pages seem obtuse in comparison. The pages are all ugly, and instructions are unclear, and files seem to be missing that instruction pages reference.

To increase participation I recommend that a very clear communicator make a new thread (perhaps a sticky) with *dead simple* step by step instructions w/screenshots on how to install and turn it on (circa 2010). Maybe even a screen flow that just shows exactly how to it, hosted on a service with crystal clear video like vimeo.com. Get our mirror neurons goin', yaknow?

Case in point, I'm having my own issues. Where exactly is the screen saver? On http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/OSX/OSX.html, it talks about it, and say to grab it off the download page, but I just can't find it. Makes me feel dumb, which is hardly what you want in a social endeavor.

Beyond my notebooks, I also have 2 8 Core Mac Pro's I'd like to put into the game, but I really only want the processor power being used when they're idle. I need that power to myself at the other times. Screen saver or idle time processing is perfect.

Second, I did install just the basic install of http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/release/Folding@home-OSX10.5-6.29.3.pkg.zip in the meantime. Activated the client in System Preferences, and hit the enable button. When does this thing activate? It's not showing any activity in Activity Monitor yet. I guess maybe this does idle time processing w/o any visual feedback?

All right, let me rephrase that: government funds plenty of things, like libraries and parks, that aren't "necessary" but wanted. If you want to keep the argument on the federal level, substitute your own examples, including national parks. (Remember Bush trying to push them towards privatization?)

If you have a balanced budget, and you suddenly unbalance it with tax cuts, the difference between revenue loss and spending is pretty much a matter of semantics. You had the money, and now you don't. At least when you spend it on a service, you expect to get something for it.

Maybe one of the problems with House Republicans is that they don't think of tax cuts that they can't afford as spending.

You won't get 30% of your electricity back. You'll get up to 30% of the power lost through heat which is accessible to the chip (that is, the portion not lost from convection cooling of the case) and above ambient temperatures. If you're in a warm room, for instance, you'll have much lower performance, since it requires the differential to work. Of course, maybe the information available isn't wholly accurate, but that's my understanding based on the description. Yeah you are in general correct... additionally these types of devices (to date... ones used in the real world) aren't the most efficient devices and require a fairly large temperature gradient.

Hope they can turn out a device for verification.

I thought there were some free map/gps/turn-by-turn direction apps out there (ala Google Maps). Is this not the case? Can anyone tell me why you would want to purchase one of the Garmin/Tom-Tom apps?

Ah, right. In the developer site there is an implication that the server version would be separate. But I'm still expecting some sort of gimmick. With the Mac Store one could end up paying for each little feature as an option.

I think to dictate what people should or shouldn't do with their machines is silly. Search the forums and the internet. The Air has proven to be plenty capable as a gaming machine for it's size and has many satisfied users talking about it.

I'm saying that's my personal opinion. I know it's capable of playing games, but many people are disappointed about something that no one knows except maybe Apple or Intel.

A computer is certainly a tool, but it can also be a gaming machine, a home theater pc, an entertainment hub, etc.; whatever a user may find use for it for.

Obviously, certain machines are better and worse at certain functions than others, but don't forget that this generation of MBA, there are people that actually did go out and buy the Air because one of the reasons is that it did happen to be a decent performer in games, while remaining ultra portable. In this case, I think the Air strikes an excellent balance between function and form.

Really? So if I buy a MBA, using your logic above, then one of the reasons I bought it was because it could play games. This is your opinion, your view of why some people buy a MBA. Just like what I said in my previous post was purely my personal opinion. Not dictation of anything. I'm sure many people agree with you and some that don't.

I use my Air for live music sets and this is exactly a scenario where such a BL KB would be grand. I read similar opinions from other musicians on this forum in another thread. Creative artists like live musicians can definitely find appropriate use for a backlit kb, but even average everyday users who don't share the same skill level as you would also benefit from it. If anything, adding convenience is always a welcome.

If you don't want or need the backlit kb, then you could always turn it off. It's there for people who might need it. Win-win situation.

That's you. I simply stated how I personally use my computer. It's different for everybody. Not everybody is like me or you. Not everyone is a musician or creative artist. Of course, the backlit keyboard is a welcome addition. I never said anything against that.

Everyone should've stopped reading at "Shaw Wu."

He is the shining example of the inanity, irrelevance, and irresponsibility of "tech analysts." It's tough not to be sour grapes when you think about how much these people must get paid...

The iPhone 4 was and still is the best

For some. My iPhone4 has been a pain in the ass when it comes to phone calls. I have a nearly 90% drop rate on phone calls. Those that do go through, no one can understand me. I think I need to exchange my phone.

    Meh

I have so many Audio editing apps right now for PPC, I'm not too concerned.

It is slightly alarming about the Intel only....

But, I'm not gonna sweat it.

Typical of a company that has no business model right now; become a patent troll. Kind of a shame, Kodak used to be a great company, but they got left behind by the digital revolution.

Exactly what I was going to say. It's sad that trolling has entered real-life now, it was bad enough when it was just an online behavior propagated by children.
